Constitutive explanation

You gather certain ingredients, mix them and bake a chocolate cake. Certainly, it is true that what you baked is a cake partly because it is made up of certain ingredients. On saying this, we state that something is constitutive of another, and we take such statement as true. If causal statements epitomizes scientific explanation, constitutive judgments are a prominent example of metaphysical explanation. In the current literature, grounding has been used to account for sentences regarding constitution. However, there is a choice that divides grounding supporters. In general, there exists a debate between those who adopt a realist stand and those who prefer an antirealist position. Particularly for the metaphysical explanation debate, realism is the view which establishes that there exists an special metaphysical relation, grounding, that backs up grounding talk. Antirealism rejects this thesis.
